Monstera adansonii, commonly called the Monkey Mask Plant or Swiss Cheese Vine, is a compact evergreen climber celebrated for its striking, naturally perforated foliage. It forms trailing or climbing stems that can reach around 1 metre in height indoors. The leaves are elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, rich green, and up to 20 centimetres long. Each leaf is characterised by several oval openings, giving it a distinctive lace-like appearance. These perforations develop as the plant matures, creating an elegant, sculptural look. When grown in ideal tropical conditions, it may produce small flowers on spadices about 3.5 centimetres long, followed by white fruits 5–8 millimetres across, though flowering is rare in household cultivation.
Growing Conditions
Monstera adansonii thrives in bright, indirect light and warm indoor temperatures between eighteen and twenty-six degrees Celsius. It prefers a free-draining compost containing bark or perlite to promote airflow around the roots. Water moderately, allowing the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Maintain consistent humidity to prevent leaf edges from browning, using misting or a pebble tray if needed. The plant climbs naturally using aerial roots, so providing a moss pole or trellis encourages upward growth and larger leaves. Avoid exposure to cold draughts or direct sunlight, which can mark the foliage.
Care and Maintenance
This species is low-maintenance and ideal for modern interiors. Feed every four weeks during spring and summer using a diluted, balanced fertiliser. Trim overlong stems to keep a tidy shape and encourage bushier growth. Repot every two years in fresh compost to maintain healthy roots. Propagate easily from stem cuttings in water or moist substrate.
Environmental Benefits
Monstera adansonii improves air quality and brings natural rhythm to indoor spaces. Its patterned leaves and trailing stems create a tropical, lively accent that complements contemporary décor.
